Hello Friends! Welcome to my new series called “Around Town”. Since we’re not from the Hampton Roads area, we’re using this time to visit some places “around town” to get to know the local establishments. (Full disclosure: We lived in Norfolk for three years but now we’re living in a different area.) I think it’s important to “get out,” see what’s going on, and learn what your area has to offer…because it may surprise you.
Commonwealth Brewing Company in Virginia Beach was so much fun. Great beer, an awesome food truck, and enough room for the kiddos to run around—I’m a happy lady.
Located in a former fire station (circa 1962) in a funky, cool area of Chic’s Beach, Commonwealth Brewing Company gives off the air that it’s not trying too hard. They’re just trying to make good beer, and that’s it. And, I believe it. There’s warm wood paneling throughout the bar, and an easy feeling that you could spend long hours talking to friends in this space (or watching your younguns scream like banchees and no one would care, jk there was none of that). And, the beer is really good….But what is beer without a good food truck??
Taste of Asia is a food truck to follow. Their tacos, yes tacos from “Taste of Asia”, are wonderful. The meat is flavorful, the sauces are savory, and it’s all a big party in your mouth. Emory loved the addition of jalapenos.
Commonwealth Brewing Company is cool and kid-friendly, and this newcomer will be visiting again. It reminds me of our favorite brewery in Raleigh, NC, the Lynnwood Brewing Concern. And, that’s all we ever need from a local joint, right? To feel like we’re home.
If you live in Hampton Roads, I would love to hear suggestions for local restaurants, breweries, etc., for us to visit. What are your favorites?
